VRF Trouble Shooting – Fujitsu

VRF Trouble Shooting – Fujitsu

Pipework
• Always check that the pipework follows the limitations in the corresponding user guides
• Use of dry nitrogen while brazing or when pipework open to atmosphere is vitale
• Always use a good electronic Torr gauge such as 617981 while evacuating
• If multiple indoor units are low on capacity, system is probably undercharged
• If one indoor unit is low on capacity, strainer is probably blocked
Outdoor Unit
• Gas pressures are frequently a bad guide to system gas charge
• Check the condensor coil is not blocked and airflow not impeded
• Make sure system is not over indexed if all indoor units are in the same area (inverter models)
Indoor Units & Heat Recovery (HR & RB) Boxes
• These items have pipework strainers which can, and do, block. Check these first.
• Temperature difference between return and supply air of 10C cooling/15C heating indicates system ok
• Always check condition of return air filters and clean if necessary
Controllers and Wiring
• All VRF systems have self diagnostics at the controller - see below
• Ensure control wiring is run in screened cable without exception (1mm 2 core CY suggested)
• Ensure screened cable is Earthed at one end only

A General Guide To Urban Style Products

Pipework
• Pipe sizes and lengths should be as the relevant Technical Guide
• Both lines should be insulated
• No line accessories or oil traps should be fitted
• In cooling mode the suction line should sweat, but not freeze
• In heating mode both pipes should be between 30 and 60C
• Pipework should be refrigeration quality
• Look for restrictions. They could cause compressor failures.
Outdoor Unit
• Discharge Temperature should be between 50 and 70C
• Suction Temperature should be between -3 and 4C
• Check Suction Line is sweating in cooling - problem if not!
• Hot Recip. Compressor = PROBLEM
• Sweating/Frost on expansion line - undercharged
Indoor Unit
• Is it level? Have we adequate drainage?
• Smells are always due to site conditions or drains.
• Flashing lights? = Fault Diagnostics - see over
• When were the filters last cleaned?
• Is the unit too large/small (between 5/20 air circs/hr)
• Is the air short cycling?
Controller
• Is it a wired or wireless handset.
• Is the handset too far away?
• When were the batteries changed last?
• With wired handset, check for interference.
• Is the unit in Emergency Mode?
• Check unit and controller channels compatible
Wiring
• Interconnecting comms wiring is low voltage
• If you have 230V live, check you have a neutral as well
• Check Mains and comms cable not swapped round
• Multi linked systems must be set up as such
• Check voltage drops! Check it isn’t down to Earth!
• Interconnecting cables should be circular crimped

Selecting Emergency Mode is done at the Indoor and Outdoor Unit PCB.
It bypasses the Control Sensors and should not be done for more than 30 minutes.

Indoor PCB - Swicth SS1 to Emergency Setting
Outdoor PCB - Swicth Emergency Swicth 1 to ON
Outdoor PCB - Swicth Emergency Swicth 2 to Cool or

Wire E - 1 - 2 - 3
All Earth - Live - Neutral - Comms

Sensor Resistances – Use to check Thermistor
Air and Pipe sensors apply to indoor AND outdoor units
The discharge sensor is only in the outdoor unit.
If the fault code suggests the sensor is a problem but you
get a sensor reading as to the right then either the connection or PCB is at fault.

Sensor - At 10C - At 20C - At 30C
Air Sensor - 40K 0hms - 25K 0hms - 16K 0hms
Pipe Sensor - 40K 0hms - 25K 0hms - 16K 0hms
Discharge Sensor - 480K 0hms - 293K 0hms - 184K 0hms

Fault codes on Panasonic US systems can be checked using both the wired remote controller and the indoor and outdoor unit LEDs. In case of a malfunction
the wired controller will give a fault code as shown below in conjunction with the accompanying LED codes.
The wireless controller can be used to interrogate a fault, if required, as described below.
1 - Press Inspection/Test button on wireless handset. 0 flashes in Unit Number display on handset.
2 - Press Up/Down button until unit starts to bleep.
3 - 1 continuous beep means No fault. 3 short beeps - follow all steps below. 1 short beep - follow step 4 until you get a continuous beep.
4 - Press the handset MODE button. Press the up/down arrow button until you get 2 short bleeps, or one continuous bleep.
5 - Press the MODE button again. Press the up/down arrow button until you get one continuous bleep.
6 - The fault code is now displayed!

We recommend external pumps have their own power supply.
Taking Power for a pump from the unit is a major source of Errors (CLIMATE CENTRE)

Pipework
• Pipe sizes and lengths should be as the relevant Technical Guide
• Both lines should be insulated
• No line accessories or oil traps should be fitted
• In cooling mode both pipes should be between 0 and 10C - the suction line should sweat, but not freeze
• In heating moded both pipes should be between 30 an 60C
• Pipework should be refrigeration quality
• Refrigerant should be R22, unless stated on the outdoor unit
• Look for restrictions. They could cause compressor failures.
Outdoor Unit
• Discharge temperature should be between 50 & 70C
• Suction temperature should be between -3 & 4C
• If fan switches off check for high discharge temperature
• Check Suction Line is sweating – problem if not!
• Hot Recip. Compressor = PROBLEM!
• Sweating/Frost on expansion line – undercharged
Indoor Unit
• Is it level? Have we adequate drainage?
• Smells are always due to site conditions or drains
• Flashing lights? = Fault Diagnostics - see over
• When were the filters last cleaned?
• Is the unit too large/small (between 5/20 air circs / hr)
• Is it on Timer/Test Mode
Controller
• EE:EE on LCD handset - fault diagnostics - see over
• Is the handset too far away?
• When were the batteries changed last?
• Heat Pump models 7-14 – NOT auto changeover
• Timer is one shot, unless it has ‘repeat’ mode
• With wired handset, check for interference. Cable should be screened
• Is it on Timer/Test Mode
Wiring
• In general interconnecting wiring is 240 Volt, but see chart for details
• With LCD wired handset models, Terminal 3 is the Live Not Terminal 1
NEVER apply mains voltage to Terminal 1 on these models
• With LCD wired handset models wiring should be screened
• Check Voltage drops! Check it isn’t down to Earth!
• Has it got a timeclock/BMS interface?
• Interconnecting cables MUST be circular crimped

What the separate Wires do in the interconnecting Cables
Note – Wires are 240V Live except where marked neutral or Earth or signal
Cables marked Signal are digital pulses and you should not attempt to measure these with a meter.

Wired Controllers - Fault diagnostics
A Fault Condition is signalled by EE:EE appearing on the LCD panel.
The unit should be interrogated by switching it off on the handset then
pressing either the down arrows on the SET TIME and TEMP/DAY buttons
together for 3 seconds for 7 day models or the ENERGY SAVE & ZONE
CONTROL buttons for other models.
The Failure code is in 2 parts - Fault and Address.
The Fault Code is an E code. The second is the unit address for multi
linked systems - with single units this is always 00. 7 day models have the
fault code as shown in the table below above the address.
Other models have the codes below, minus the 0, followed by the address
- e.g. E9:00 denoting Float Switch on Unit 0.

Code = E:0

Outdoor Unit with
A fault condition is signified by flashing red LED’s on the the outdoor PCB
if it is equipped with one. Except for multisplits and 2 LED models, the
diagnostics are shown in the table on the right.
For 2 LED models flashing signifies sensor failure and constantly lit
indicates high discharge temperature.
